Greenpeace Supports Renewables in ASEAN Countries
In Bali this month, Greenpeace Southeast Asia indicated their support for increased renewable energy development in countries of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (Asean). Their report on “Energy [R]evolution: A Sustainable Asean Energy Outlook” included geothermal as a key part of the renewable mix as well as the strategy moving forward, and said that renewables could comprise 70% of the region’s total electricity generation by 2050. Australia: Nation’s Geothermal Industry Presses Forward
Geothermal updates from Australia include Greenearth Energy’s geothermal project in Anglesea and the company’s reaction on being rejected by the Australian Renewable Energy Agency (ARENA). Company managing director Samuel Marks told press that the company hopes to continue its pursuit of the resource. “The fact that ARENA has declined this proposal at such an early stage of the process is a concern for the industry as a whole and Greenearth Energy is now considering its next steps for the GGPP,” Marks was quoted. “Greenearth Energy will seek to hold discussions with other key parties to the GGPP (including the Victorian government, Melbourne University and others) in order to determine the best way forward for Greenearth Energy’s Australian geothermal interests.” Surfcoasttimes.com.au

Elsewhere in Australia, Torrens Energy Ltd plans to continue in the geothermal realm; Green Thermal Energy Technology moves forward with its new tri-lateral flash cycle (TFC) pilot power plant; and Western Australian Department of Mines and Petroleum has an updated map of geothermal tenement areas in W.A. Curtin University announced further discovery of geothermal potential within Perth Basin’s permeable sediments. Guam: Community College Course will Cover Geothermal and Other Renewables
Guam Community College is working with private sector individuals to offer a course on “Introduction to Renewable Energy.” Rick Tyquiengco, chair of GCC’s Technology Department told press (Guampdn.com): “What we are trying to do long-term is to develop a certificate in renewable energy . . . This certificate will be beneficial for entry-level technicians in the renewable energy field.” The course will outline the fundamentals of technologies in wind, solar, bioenergy, and geothermal energy.

Japan: Fukushima Geothermal Resource Under Review
Ten companies are set to study the geothermal resource potential at an 80-km2 area around Mount Bandai in Fukushima Prefecture. Fukushima was the location of the 2011 Daiichi nuclear disaster which has since seen Japan seeking alternate energy solutions, including geothermal energy. Japan has also relaxed national park laws, and a project resulting from this cooperative study would be built in a national park. Idemitsu Kosan Co. and Japan Petroleum Exploration Co. are two of the companies involved in the study, which the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry (METI) intends to subsidize. A future power plant could have an estimated capacity of ~270,000 kW or 270 MW. METI has reported to GEA that 36 geothermal power projects are currently development, with four of those under construction. At least 50 MW of geothermal power are planned to come on line by the end of the decade. Myanmar: Geothermal Feasibility Study Planned
A Singaporean company has entered a memorandum of understanding with the Myanmar Ministry of Electric Power on geothermal energy. The feasibility study by Emerging Markets Energy Pte Ltd will cover areas in Shan state, Tanintharyi, Sagaing, Magway and Mandalay regions. Specifically, best resources are expected downstream of Chindwin River in Sagaing and Magway, at Mount Popa and Singu Hill in Mandalay, and at hot springs near Maungmakan Beach in Tanintharyi. The country’s power consumption has seen an annual increase of 15%. Mizzima.com

Pakistan: Geothermal can Provide Answers to Energy Crisis
Chairman Energy Foundation Pakistan (EFP) Javed Ahmad spoke up on the country’s geothermal energy resources this week. Ahmad said geothermal can help to overcome the energy crisis in Pakistan, and added that it is available in all provinces of the country. Pakistantoday.com.pk

The Philippines: BacMan Repairs Extended
Energy Development Corp (EDC) has told press that hairline cracks on the turbine blades of BacMan’s 55-megawatt Unit 1 will mean an extension on the shutdown period of the Bacon-Manito geothermal plant which is undergoing other repairs. Interaksyon.com
