A US-China team studies life in geo systems; Indonesia’s Garut to get 35-MW unit

A US-China research team studies life in terrestrial geothermal systems. Japan-based Sumitomo Corp. has been selected to build the fifth unit of the Kamojang geothermal station in Garut, Indonesia.

China: US-China Research Symposium Focuses on Life in Terrestrial Geothermal Systems
According to American Geophysical Union’s online library, a binational (U.S.-China) research team studied “Questions on Life in Terrestrial Geothermal Systems.” A Symposium on China-US Collaborative Research on Life in Terrestrial Geothermal Springs met in Kunming, China, on June 26–28 on the campus of Yunnan University in Kunming, China. The group discussed “recent progress and future plans to leverage binational support to address major questions on life in terrestrial geothermal systems.” Present at the symposium, there were about 90 faculty, postdocs, and students from China and about 30 faculty, postdocs, students, and high school teachers from the United States. Indonesia: Sumitomo to Put Up 35-MW Unit at Garut, West Java
Japan-based Sumitomo Corp. has been selected to build the fifth unit of the Kamojang geothermal station in Garut, West Java. The 35-MW unit will be built with PT Rekayasa Industri, and Fuji Electric Co. will supply a steam turbine and generator. Construction is expected to be complete in July 2015. Bloomberg.com
