California’s Salton Sea; Geothermal in Chaffee County, Colorado; GHPs in Kentucky and Massachusetts; Texas doctors want clean energy; West Virginia’s geothermal

This week in U.S. States, southern California officials reach an agreement on Salton Sea restoration. In Colorado, Chaffee County is streamlining its geothermal process. Kentucky’s Henry Clay Estate will get a new geothermal heating and cooling system. In Tewksbury, Massachusetts, a $24,000 state grant will be used to install a geothermal-energy system. A report requested by Dallas County Medical Society and Texas Medical Association says geothermal energy is a future possibility for replacing power from three big coal-burning power plants near Dallas, Texas. In Morgantown, West Virginia, geothermal energy was on the agenda at a recent symposium.

On October 22, Imperial Irrigation District of California approved a memorandum of understanding with Imperial County and the Air Pollution Control District to address the decline of the Salton Sea and potential environmental and economic consequences. The county and IID will seek available funding to develop geothermal energy in the area and a transmission line. The district also pledges not to transfer water out of the Valley and to oppose efforts to the contrary (Ivpressonline.com) An article on Utsandiego.com further states, “All that’s needed is a determination that addressing the looming environmental threat at the Salton Sea meets the state’s definition of a policy-driven objective on multiple fronts and to:
— Direct the California Independent System Operator to construct a 500-kV transmission line from Devers in Eastern Riverside County through the heart of IID’s energy balancing authority to the Imperial Valley Substation;
— Revisit the California Public Utilities Commission procurement policy to allow for up to 1,700 megawatts of must-take purchase power agreements from the Salton Sea resource area.”

Chaffee County, Colorado Commissioners have passed Bill 1041, seeking to streamline a currently redundant process for geothermal developers approaching the county, and lifted a moratorium on geothermal projects. The move was supported by County attorney Jenny Davis, who provided official comments to commissioners; she said the “Use of Geothermal Resources for the Commercial Production of Electricity” legislation should include surface uses, and that developers should not go through redundant processes. At Ashland, Kentucky’s Henry Clay Estate, a new geothermal heating and cooling system will replace a 20-year-old chiller. At a cost of about $80,000 planners expect the system to bring down utility bills by $12-1,400 a month. The home was built in the 1800s. Wkyt.com

In Tewksbury, Massachusetts, a $24,000 state grant will be used to install a geothermal-energy system for a year-round produce washing and storage facility owned by Farmer Dave Dumaresq. Dumaresq will contract with Northeast Geo of Barrington, N.H. on drilling to begin next month, and Northeast Geo technicians will install the hardware. The grant was “a great example of the state supporting local businesses,” Sen. Barry Finegold, D-Andover was quoted on Lowellsun.com.

Geothermal energy is a future possibility for replacing power from three big coal-burning power plants near Dallas, Texas, says a report requested by Dallas County Medical Society and Texas Medical Association. The group is pushing for cleaner air, but Texas environmental officials rejected the society’s potentially $900-million request to pin down emissions on “The medical community of Dallas is now deeply aware of a problem,” Dr. Robert Haley, a professor at UT Southwestern Medical Center, was quoted talking to commissioners. “We’ve discovered this, we’ve studied it, and we’re here to stay.” Dallasnews.com

Geothermal energy was on the agenda at the recent Science, Technology and Research or STaR Symposium in Morgantown, WV. The state is looking at its energy future, particularly the research and workforce components. Wvah.com In 2010, in a study funded by Google.org, Southern Methodist University made the major discovery of sites in West Virginia with temperatures of ~392°F (200°C) at 5-km depths. Using this new data, SMU placed the state’s geothermal power potential at 18,890 MW: a significant increase over prior estimates and the largest known geothermal reserve in the Eastern U.S. Geo-energy.org, PDF, p. 26.
