Geothermal could fill energy needs in Guatemala

Guatemala: MEM to Increase Capacity Sought in Renewable Energy Tender

Submitted by Marcelo Lippmann, source: ReadMetro.com ~ Guatemala’s Ministerio de Energía y Minas (MEM) and the National Energy Commission are looking to increase an open bid tender for renewable energy from 250 MW to 400 MW. The tender “Generation Expansion Plan (PEG) 03-2013″ (PEG 3) was announced in September 2013, and the increased target capacity is due to delays in a coal-fired power project by Jaguar Energy. The new renewable energy projects will be awarded contracts of up to 15 years and would start operating in 2017. Erick Archila, head of MEM, was quoted saying the call for bids could be made between April and June of this year.
